Over the past few seasons in the drag radial world, many classes have been created to bring in more cars and have better competition. After two seasons of racing in Outlaw Drag Radial (ODR) and Outlaw 275, numerous promoters and racers have joined together to form a rules committee to create a new class known as Limited Drag Radial (LDR).
It has been said for months that there are too many classes in certain forms of heads-up drag racing, causing a split between events and hurting car counts. With the formation of LDR, this will cause unity between Outlaw Drag Radial and Outlaw 275 and making things easier for fans to understand.
Now with Radial vs. The World/Pro Drag Radial as the top class in small tire racing, LDR will slide in between RVW and X275, elapsed time-wise. This will now give three solid top tier classes at all the big radial events across the globe, which will distinguish certain cars to their classes like Radial vs. The World and X275 has done over the past few seasons.
LDR opens the door to numerous combinations and cars that you’ve seen for years competing in multiple classes. All of the normal power adders are allowed in this category — nitrous oxide, turbochargers and superchargers. Tires are limited to the Mickey Thompson 275 Pro Radial, 315/60 Radial, 325/50 Radial, 295/65 DOT Radial, or 295/55 DOT Radial, with the 275 receiving a weight break to entice more of the runners from Outlaw 275 to come over and run the newly formed LDR. With limitations on turbo sizes, superchargers and weights on quicker and faster combinations, Limited Drag Radial is looking to be the next big thing in drag radial competition.
LDR will make it’s debut during Lights Out 7 at South Georgia Motorsports Park with $10,000 to win, followed by the Outlaw Street Car Reunion III at Memphis International Raceway, less than a month later, with $5,000 to win. Numerous other events have signed on to the LDR bandwagon, including Radial Fest at Huntsville Dragway and the Prize Fight at Ohio Valley Dragway.
With $15,000 to win in less than a month, LDR will have a strong opening to the world of drag radial and will be a big story to watch as the 2015 season comes to a close within the next few weeks and 2016 events begin to debut shortly.
