Back in 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency demanded that oil makers lower the amount of zinc in their passenger car oil products. The reasoning is that burnt zinc creates a microscopic ash that could cause cancer and shorten the lifespan of catalytic converters.
The effect on regular passenger cars in minimal, but as zinc is commonly used as an anti-wear additive, it would be problematic for high-performance engines. Lucas Oil, in a bid to better serve its high-performance costumers, has created a Racing Only Catalog for hardcore racers. Inside of this catalog is a bevy of performance products, from engine break-in oil to gear lubricants and grease.
Since these products are designed for racing, and not general use, Lucas is able to put much higher levels of zinc than the old SAE API standards allowed for. However, there is more to racing oil than just zinc, and these lubricants are specially formulated. They understand that they are dealing with camshaft lift that can exceed 1-inch, and many of these motors spin at an excess of 10,000 RPM’s. These zinc-heavy oils provide excellent anti-wear protection and can stand up to higher oil temperatures. Their Racing Only Catalog is filled with important products and information for serious racers, so make sure you check it out.
