First Ever NMRA/NMCA Eaton TVS Supercharger Throwdown

When the NMRA and NMCA came together in Commerce, Georgia, the first weekend of April, the pair brought with it the first ever Eaton TVS Supercharger Throwdown. The NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals was the reason for the gathering of all of the country’s fastest Fords (and non-Fords) to fight it out on the drag strip and take home a trophy and bragging rights. The NMRA and NMCA series collide only twice per season – once in Georgia, and again for the Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in Joliet, Illinois, later in the year. All-in-all the Georgia event featured 29 unique classes meaning there really was a spot for every combination.

For the first time ever, the NMRA/NMCA teamed up with Eaton to present the Eaton TVS Supercharger Throwdown! The competition pitted TVS-equipped cars against one another in a heads-up shootout with a simple objective: get to the finish line first. Any late-model Ford, Chevy, or Dodge engine (including LS, LT, Modular, and GEN III HEMI) equipped with a Roots-style supercharger with any size TVS rotor package was welcome to complete. Each vehicle had to meet a minimum weight, and be registered and insured for street use. This means that all vehicles had to be production-line built with a VIN tag, prohibiting COPO, Cobra Jet, and Drag Pak cars from participating.

The incredible prize package for the winner included $1,000 cash, a stunning TVS trophy, and a new TVS supercharger from one of EATON’s technical partners – Edelbrock, Harrop, Magnuson, or ROUSH Performance.

In all, five Mustangs and two Camaros gave it their best shot for a chance at a trip to the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle. Qualifying found Oscar Morin of Mercedes, Texas, in the number one spot with his 2016 Mustang, awarding him the round one bye. He was also the only driver in the class to run in the 8’s throughout the weekend (8.684 at 156 mph to be exact). Dalton Vinkler flew through round one with his Edelbrock-supercharged stick shift Mustang to the sweet tune of 9.87 at 143, taking out Jason Wagoner’s 2014 Mustang.

At the end of round one, the class was less one Camaro, thanks to Brian Devilbiss’ Mustang, and a ZL1 and the three remaining Mustangs prepared to enter round two. Morin took another W in round two, eliminating Chris Bishir and his 2018 Camaro ZL1, making for an all Mustang final round. Meanwhile, Devilbiss’ 2018 Mustang defeated Vinkler, giving him a pass to the finals.

Late in the afternoon on Sunday, after three rounds of thrashing, Brian Devilbiss of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was victorious. The number one qualifier ran into some issues, and Devilbiss ran a 9.276 to Morin’s 11.903.

Devilbiss’ 2018 Mustang was prepared by Evolution Performance, and features an Edelbrock E-Force Stage 2 Supercharger kit with a 2.65L rotor pack. According to Edelbrock, the Stage 2 builds on the Stage 1 kit by upgrading to a larger air intake, 103mm throttle body (Stage 1 includes a 90mm throttle body), and an inlet tube with a 113mm mass airflow sensor housing. The S550 is also equipped with a handful of additional Edelbrock goodies and was tuned by Jon Lund Jr. of Lund Racing. Devilbiss says that the combination is good for 1,020 horsepower and 919 torque at the rear wheels, allowing the Mustang to crank out consistent low 9-second passes. And don’t forget – this S550 is still a 4,180-pound street car!

Devilbiss has noted that his new Eaton TVS Supercharger Throwdown trophy is currently located at Evolution Performance as they work toward pushing the Mustang into the 8-second range very soon.

The coveted Eaton TVS Supercharger Throwdown trophy

“We’re very pleased with the performance of our new E-Force R2650 TVS Superchargers this past weekend,” said Don Barry, President and CEO of Edelbrock. “These kits are designed for enthusiasts who want to get the most out of their vehicles through an easy-to-install package. The wins speak for themselves and once again demonstrate our never-ending commitment to creating the highest quality performance products.”

No word from NMRA/NMCA yet on a second annual TVS Throwdown, but if it happens, you know we’ll be there for it!
