ADRL Palm Beach Spring Drags II 2011

The ADRL visits Palm Beach for their first ever south Florida race. We saw some fresh faces in the winner circle during the season opener and we will be on site all weekend to keep you up to date on all the action…and upsets.

COVERAGE STARTS FRIDAY MORNING!

We had some rain this morning which delayed the original start time to about 12:45 PM. The track is going hot as soon as the drivers are suited up. There are several new cars here this weekend so we will start with pit notes.

Morning Notes

A new Shepard Race Cars 68 Camaro for Mike Stavrinos is on the lot for it's Pro Nitrous race debut. The Stavrinos' own Speed and Truck World and hail from Ft. Lauderdale. They are currently running the small engine with Nelson Competition scheduled to deliver a new bigger 800 plus ci. piece in 3-4 weeks.

Tony Christian has a new car he purchased out of Puerto Rico a couple of years ago. Earlier this year he spoke with Jimmy Keen about driving and they made a deal where Keen purchased an engine from Reher Morrison and will be driving the car. They tested in Bradenton recently with a 4.04. he is happy so far as the car is doing what it's supposed to.

John Hall is another racer with a new car this weekend. Pat Musi is on hand tuning the fuel injection on his 903 ci BBC. They have been as fast as 3.90 testing here at PBIR about two months ago. John is a former Pro Street racer and is excited to race with the ADRL. They did race the Houston event but broke a driveshaft ending their weekend early.

Kevin Bealko has a new Hass built Pontiac GXP for Xtreme Pro Stock for 2011. The Black Diamond Motorsports/ Mind Science sponsored entry is based out of Bridgeport, West Virginia and has the latest Sonny's powerplant under the hood.

Randy Weatheroford is here with a new Bickel built 69 Yenko schemed Camaro for it's Pro Nitrous competition debut. They have tested in the 3.80's so far with the Reher Morrison engine and look forward to the season with the new WS Construction sponsored ride.

Frankie Taylor is here this weekend with two cars again. After having good luck in Qatar with the two car program they are back at it in the States wityh last years Pro Extreme ride now doing duty in Extreme 10.5 and the new Corvette in Pro Extreme.

Jim Laurita runs this Tim McCamis built 70 Camaro in Pro Nitrous. Keith Bell and Butch Metcalf were making some adjustments to the carbs this morning. The team hails from Morgantown, West Virginia.

El General racing in the house for their first ADRL event for 2011. Mike "Hit Man" Hill is behind the wheel and they tested in Bradenton recently running a best of 3.99, Bum Harrison and Pedro Apolito are handling the tuneup on the car on the Fulton 860 ci.Pro Nitrous entry.

Aronson Motorsports is running a two car team this year with Richie Stevens behind the wheel of the second car. It's the 2009 Mustang formerly campained by Cuningham Racing and driven by Erica Enders. Richie is having a good time back behind the wheel and is looking to have a production with the Car Safe sponsored Extreme Pro Stock Mustang.

Raymond Matos has this Cuda formerly owned by Dennis Radford. The team is from Puerto Rico and won Dragstock 5 in their ADRL debut. This is the first ADRL race for 2001 and are looking to run assorted Pro Mod type events up and down the East coast.

Dingman racing has new paint for the Black Widow car and a new driver with Tony Gillig on board for this year. They run an engine from Ron Hutter under the Canned Heat name on the side, a name Hutter used in the past on his own cars.

Tulsa Raceway track owner Todd Martin currently runs the Pro Extreme class and has a new 68 Mustang from Garrett on order. They are awaiting delivery of their PSI blower after some modifications performed by Cantrell Motorsports.

Round One Qualifying Notes

Extreme Pro Stock

Cary Goforth leads the Extreme Pro Stock qualifying with a 4.08 @ 176 after one round in the books. John Montecalvo is close behind with a 4.092 and just ahead of Pete Berner's 09 GXP, 4.097.

Extreme 10.5

Frankie Taylor and Todd Moyer were the first pair out in Extreme 10.5 action with Taylor running a 3.99 @ 197 out of the box for the number one qualifier.

Billy Glidden had a nice run landing second spot with a 4.01 @ 182. he was out in front of Todd Tutterow who got loose and shot across the track behind Glidden. He did a fabulous job of keeping the car under control and away from the wall.

Robert Abbott, Jimmy Marino and Wild Bill Devine are not regulars here at the ADRL and normally race assorted outlaw events around Frlorida and the Southeast. Dan Millen lost the blower belt at the hit on his pass.

Jimmy marino is running on 10.5's for the first time here this weekend inhis first ADRL and sits in third spot with a 4.22 @ 169 MPH.

Pro Nitrous

Mike Castellana ripped off a nice 3.86 @ 194 to earn number one qualifier in round one.

Last years Pro Nitrous Champion Burton Auxier sits in second with a 3.88 @ 190.

There is a full field of Pro Nitrous entries here this weekend with 19 making runs in round one for the first event here in South Florida.

Pro Extreme

Once again the first pair out set low ET for the round. For Pro Extreme it was Joey Martin's Lowmad taking the honors with a 3.67 @ 204.

Mick Snyder sits in third with the Powerhouse transportation Vette after one round of qualifying for the Pro Extreme cars. He beat out Frankie Taylor for the spot with a better mile per hour. Both ran identical 3.714 ET's.

Round Two Qualifying Notes

Extreme Pro Stock

Trevor Eman jumped into the field and landed in sixth with a 4.14 @ 173. Lester Cooper also made it into the field from the twenty first spot in the first session, his 4.17 in this round was good for thirteenth.

Cary Goforth led round one and held on to the top spot after the second round of Extreme Pro Stock with his 2009 Chevy Cobalt. Cary is half of a father and son team, his father Dean is the number four qualifier with a 4.104 @ 175.57, a big improvements from this earlier attempt.

Pete Berner sits in third with the Summit Racing 2009 Pontiac GXP. He also was unable to improve in the second session.

John Montecalvo also held his position and maintains second spot in the XPS field.

Extreme 10.5

After losing the blower belt in the first session Dan Millen came out swinging in his Ford Racing, Livernois Motorsports sponsored 2011 Mustang and laid down a 3.89 @ 198 to take over top qualifier from Frankie "Mad Man" Taylor.

Lamar Swindell Jr. also improved after his close call in round one qualifying. His 3.99 @ 200 put him in second position, ahead of Taylor and Glidden.

Jimmy marino improved slightly to a 4.219 @ 169 but dropped to fifth as other racers improved. Twelve cars also made the call for this session after only eight making the earlier round.

Pro Nitrous

Mahana Al-Naemi improved from the bump to number one in round two qualifying of Pro Nitrous with a very nice 3.850 @ 193 MPH.

Castellana also improved slightly with a 3.858 @ 195 and maintaining second position.

Robert Rahaim made the trip from Grosse Pointe, Michigan for the race. he improved from a 3.93 to a 3.87 @ 191 in round two, improving one spot to third position with the career best run.

Rickie Jones ran a nice 3.98 in round one, then stepped it up to a 3.896 @ 190 in the second session to keep his fifth place position. Rickie is the son of car builder Rick Jones and has been running NHRA Pro Stock the last three years, had his ADRL Pro Nitrous debut this year in houston and was number one qualifier and runnered up to Shannon Jenkins at the Southern Shakedown here at PBIR in early March.

Pro Extreme

Joey Martin put the Lowmad on the pole and stayed there in round two with a 3.670 @ 204.

Von Smith is second qualifier with the 3.69 @ 206 from his first attempt in round one. Smith hails from Oakridge, Tennessee and run a 68 Camaro with a BAE 526, the standard of several teams in the Pro Extreme class.

Mick Snyder improved his ET from a 3.71 to a 3.699 @ 203, just holding off Frankie Taylor's 3.701.

Jason Hamstra also improved ET to keep his fifth place qualifier. Hamstra runs a 70 Duster from Andy McCoy Race Cars and is coming off a Pro Extreme win from Houston.

Round Three Qualifying Results

Extreme Pro Stock

Amazingly Cary Goforth held on to the top qualifier with his first round pass this afternoon.

Extreme 10.5

Dan Millen held onto the number one position today despite sitting out the third session to save parts.

Billy Glidden broke into the threes on his final pass with a 3.96 @ 183 to move up to second spot.

Jason Carlton had no luck in his first two attemtps today, then stepped it up, running a 4.211 @ 171 to land in fifth position. he is running a turbocharged 05 Celica formerly run by Matt Scranton with a Nelson Competition 525 Hemi on board

JR Ward is driving the original Oddy Corvette here this weekend. The Lynchburg, Virginia resident ran a 4.33 @ 169.

"Wild" Bill Devine broght his 2001 Cobra from Lake Worth, Florida to give the ADRL a try. He managed a 4.39 @ 164 for ninth place in the field of twelve cars.

Pro Nitrous

Al-Naemi improved to a 3.79 @ 196 to hold the top qualifier position today.

Khalid Al-Balooshi put his Speedtech/Al Anabi 68 Camaro from outside the field all the way to third with a 3.822, just .02 behind Mike Castellana.

JIm Halsey made the trip from maryland and wound up in ninth position after three round today. he drives a McCamis 68 Camaro with a Fulton 864.

Burton Auxier maintained fourth position by improving to a 3.85 @ 193 in this round, his earlier 3.88 would have only been good for seventh due to the improvement of other racers.

Pro Extreme

Joey Martin was on a rail today running in the mid 3.60's all day. In the third session he laid down a 3.642 @ 205 to hold off Hamstra.

jason Hamstra jumped up to second on his final run of the day with a fine 3.654 @ 209.

Bubba Stanton put his 63 Corvette in eleventh position with a 3.79 in round two and did not improve his ET in the final session of today.

Aaron Wells is here at his first ARDL event with Darren Mayer Performance Engineering and is qualified fifteenth so far.

Von Smith wound up in fifth after the end of the third session. He did not improve his Et and fell three spots.
