Snowbird Nationals 2011 Same Day Coverage

Welcome to day two here at Bradenton’s Snowbird Outlaw Nationals. We have some more cloud cover today keeping the track temps down a bit, still little to no chance of rain in the forecast. Qualifying for the heads up cars is scheduled for 2 PM with the Jet cars to follow. Stay tuned for updates through the day.

Morning Pit Notes

 

This is the first race for Justin Swanstrom and he will be racign the 5.50 class. he recently made his first run at Sunshine last month. The Fat Boy Racing team runs out of Zepherhills, Florida. The car was purchased out of California and will be set up for X-275 when Justing gets more seat time. His father Corey runs a turbocharged Mustang in X-275 but taking this weekend off to handle tuning for Justin.

Walt Drakeford from Real Speed Racing has been struggling with the car going straight recently. That should be figured out today. he is coming off a win here at the ODRC race in october for X-275 in a close final with Troy Pirez. from left to right, Chevelle Rob, Walt Drakeford.

Tom Brown switched up to a Mustang from his Dodge Dart he ran previously. He is still using the Mopar powerplant, a 340 ci with W5 heads. He is fresh of a X-275 win at Immokalee. The chassis was done by Jason at Elite Race Cars and certified to 6.50 @ 3500 lbs. Engine machine work is done at Progressive Race Engines, assembled by Tom with Pro Flow Nitrous.

Yes yet another Mustang in X-275, this one owned by Russ Wallace and driven by Jeff Wallace. Chassis by LJ Race Cars in Davie, Florida, engine by Steve at Progressive Race Engines, Performance Automatic glide, Pro Flow Nitrous, and a AA Performance K member. The engine is fresh after being installed yesterday after burning a piston at No Mercy in October.

The Lutz crew in the house this weekend. Clint Lonon is ready to defend his win from last years event in X-275. From left to right, Clint Lonon, Bobby aka: Shirtless and Kelly Lonon. He runs a BES engine with Induction Solutions nitrous.

This 56 Chevy is campaigned by Larry Hart in X-275 with a BBC on the bottle. Larry owns a transmission shop in his hometown of Dover, Florida with several units in competition this weekend.

This AMC Gremlin belongs to Tom Devito from Palmetto, Florida. He is here for the bracket program and gets the award this morning for being the farthset away from staging.

Scott and Susan Vanderspool run the blown BMW in Outlaw Pro Mod. A wheelie last night had them making a suspension adjustment this morning. Her 8.11 puts her in 10th so far, they are looking for high 7's today.

Steve from CRT is repairing Chad Opaleski's powerglide this morning after he tore up some parts in the gear set. he should be all set for the round two session.

Mickey Thompson is a major sponsor of this race as well as being our event coverage sponsor. They are on hand with plenty of tires for on site sales and service.

there are several jet cars here this weekend so the jet Jam should be an awesome spectacle. This one is the Cannonball Express, one of three cars in the KC Jones Racing stable, two jets and one brand new wheelstander, the Crazy Train. They hail from Oklahoma.

Dave Hance lost a valve on last nights qualfier, they have one side buttoned back up with a new piston and a loaned head from Von Smith.

Orlando Street Nationals OL 10.5 2011 winner Fran Meshaw torquing down the bead locks on a new set of Mickey's. He arrived this morning.

 

 

Round Two Qualifying Results

 

 

 

Nothing to really say about this awesome, crazy jet Semi. Plenty of fire and a good show.

Elaine Larson leaves the line in the Miller Welding sponsored Jet Dragster.

KC jones racing broght two jet cars from Oklahoma. the jets are always a crowd pleaser.

Chris Mendola made a switch to Outlaw Pro Mod and sits on the bump with a 6.52.

Jason Carlton was good for a 4.10 @ 185 in the 04 Celica formerly campaigned by the Scranton brothers and now powered by a 590 cubic inch Hemi.

Mark Wells was second in the Auto Pro Mod field after two rounds.

Steve George got down with a 4.44 @ 156 in his 07 Corvette. A new wrap has Steve Schmidt and Induction Solutions featured prominently.

Elaine Larson signs some autographs along the fence before the Jet Jam this afternoon.

Wade Gullet had a wild ride in his Camaro after getting to the right of the groove, skidding across the track and tagging the wall. Shame to see such a nice car damadged but that's racing as they say, we are just glad he is ok.

 

Rob Briscoe put his Nova on the pole in Outlaw 632, with Brent Newell in second. Briscoe just reinstalled the fresh engine from Nelson Competition. He owns Atlantic Collision n Stuart, Florida.

Scott Husted is a little off pace this weekend with his best run a 5.01 @ 152. Round two had him leaving quite a bit of fluid on the track along side of Dave Hance. the cleanup took over an hour but he made next round.

Tony Ridenour had the car to beat through round two with a 4.56, Chris Tedeschi was close behind with a 4.66.

Sean Lyons made his best run out of the box last night with a 4.87 @ 150. No one bettered that time on Saturday.

Hannah Saunders is a newcomer to 6.50 Index racing but has plenty of seat time in Jr. Dragsters. Her father Kurt recently purchased this Mustang from Bill Lilly and has it tuned down for the class. She was bumped to third spot in the second session.
