The racing season is just kicking off in Australia and records are beginning to fall in a hurry. Last weekend the quickest radial tire pass down under was made, and a new record was set for the quickest Nissan-powered sport compact vehicle, when Scott Porter ran his swoop Nissan Infiniti G35 deep into the sixes, posting a 6.32 at over 228 mph.
Porter is no stranger to going fast with just six cylinders and a set of turbos. Earlier this year, Porter strapped the back-up motor from his G35 into a dragster he had laying around and ran a 6.68 at 212 mph while trying to be the first sport compact powered vehicle to crack the five-second barrier.
This past weekend at Sydney Dragway the SPR team unloaded the RJ Race Cars-built 2006 model G35 and started chipping away at the record. After the first pass the six cylinder Nissan VQ35 powerplant appeared to be hurt so the team had to do a quick engine swap. On the next pass Porter had to play a game of ride-’em cowboy as the Nissan made a hard move to the left, and even had the driver side door come ajar but still ran a 6.73 at 177 mph. On the third pass Porter was finally able to set the record, running a 6.32 at 228 even with the car still moving around slightly as it goes down track. Check out the great footage from FullBoost showing this Nissan putting up some big numbers as it creeps ever-closer to the frontrunners in the sport compact game.
