For drag racers, the risk of crashes, car parts breaking and fires at the drag strip are accepted risks. With those risks in mind, we expect our tracks to not only have life-saving equipment on hand, but also have people trained to use it if something does go wrong. However, as we’ve seen in numerous incidences this year, some tracks are not as prepared as we’d expect and some are even faking their preparedness. Thanks to Jalopnik, we take a look as some of the scary incidents that occurred in the 2011 racing season, hoping it will make you more aware of your unexpected, yet possible safety risks at the track.
One video that surfaced on YellowBullet this year showed the inside of an ambulance at No Limit Raceway in Morocco, Indiana. While the outside of the ambulance looks like a fully-functional emergency responder, the inside is empty. Rather than at the track to help, the ambulance was merely there for show. Check out the baffling video below.
Ambulances aren’t the only things being faked either. As another internet video shows, fire trucks are also being put on tracks just for show. Unfortunately for one driver at the Motor Mile Dragway in Fairlawn, Virginia, a locked and unmanned fire truck at the end of the track meant the ultimate demise for his burning vehicle as he ran to the truck trying to get help. Check out the video below.
Another publicized incident didn’t involve useless safety vehicles, but brought to light the lack of emergency equipment and properly trained personnel some tracks have. In the video below you can see how much the emergency help was lacking at the Capital Raceway in Crofton, Maryland when the Vinny Dirose “Black Ice” ‘57 Chevy crash occurred earlier this year.
These incidences and videos are undoubtedly scary and make you wonder about the safety at your own track. Hopefully the publicity that is being brought to the tracks with inferior safety elements will make tracks step up their game and prevent more scary incidences like the ones seen here from happening in the future. In the meantime, we urge you to be aware of your safety risks at the track, especially the unexpected ones. After all, it may be up to you, and only you, to stop an emergency situation.
