Glidden Resigns From Cunnigham Pro Stock Team

When the NHRA tour rolls back into Pomona next month for the season opening Winternationals, things in the Pro Stock pits will look quite a bit different for the Ford faithful from when they left in November. Last month, Cunningham Motorsports announced 19-year old Virginian Buddy Perkinson as the new driver of the teams’ Ford Mustang, who would be making the move up from the sportsman ranks. At the same time but quietly under the radar, it was also divulged that the team – which had previously campaigned two cars – would be reduced to one, thus leaving popular shoe Erica Enders without a ride for the new year.

But the latest bombshell is easily the biggest of them all. Late last week, it was confirmed that living legend Bob Glidden, who has been though his fair share of Pro Stock teams in the last handful of years, has left Cunningham Motorsports. Reportedly, Glidden and Cunnigham shared differing opinions regarding the teams choice of drivers, resulting in Gliddens departure.

According to an NHRA.com news release: “Jim informed me last Thursday [Jan. 6], that it wasn’t any of my business who is driving his cars. I thought he had more respect for me than that, but apparently he doesn’t, and so I have left the team. It broke my heart, but that’s the way it is.”

Cunningham said, “Yes, Bob and I did have a disagreement over the choice of drivers, and I’m sorry to see him go. But we’ve been doing this for a long time, and we will proceed to move forward. At this time, it looks like we’ll probably miss the Winternationals because that’s a long way to go from our shop in Maryland and then back to Gainesville for the next race. We feel we can put that time to better use by testing, which we plan to do a lot of.”

Glidden took his tuning role one step further during the final handful of races of the 2010 season by piloting the teams’ second Mustang before withdrawing from competition during qualifying in Pomona, where he hit his head and was rushed to a hospital after passing out following a run. The longtime Ford runners’ involvement with the Cunningham team was a huge shot in the arm for Blue Oval fans everywhere, and his departure leaves a gaping hole in the FoMoCo flag.
