If you missed Mecum’s 24th annual Original Spring Classic Auction the third weekend in May, you missed out on one heck of a sale. Auctioned off at the event was a notable ‘69 HEMI Charger R/T. While this was one of three ‘69 Chargers at the Spring Classic, being very rare and part of the Orland Koppes Mopar Collection brought our attention to the car.
The ‘69 charger was one in 461 HEMI R/Ts produced in 1969. It was black on black with stripe delete. It came equipped with the date-coded, correct 426cui/425hp engine and original transmission with 3.55 rear-end gears. Power steering, disc brakes and windows came on the car in addition to an AM 8-track stereo and tic-toc-tachometer.
The Charger featured hideaway headlights and a split bench seat with arm rests in the center. Although the wheels were originally steel, they were upgraded to Magnum 500 wheels before the auction. This beautiful Charger is registered in the Chrysler Registry and was sold with its original window sticker, bill of sale and delivery slip.
At the Spring Classic, this car was sold for $85,000. It was outbid by another ’69 Charger R/T on the auction block, which sold for $95,000. Although the $85,000 Charger was in excellent shape, we’re guessing that the other Charger may have had a numbers-matching engine, upping its value even more.
Unfortunately, Mecum’s InfoNet website didn’t have information about, or an image of, the other Charger, so we can’t tell for sure what made that one worth more. We’re sure that whoever walked away as the new owner of either Charger walked away as a happy camper. Who wouldn’t after winning the keys to a well-maintained, rare piece of automotive history?
