The 1960’s gave America many racing legends who came from all walks of life. Some of these names are forever immortalized in the brands they built, like Vic Edelbrock and Mickey Thompson. Thompson, who ran many successful drag racing bids, was the subject of many a documentary and news story on his racing success.
Up on YouTube we came across some classic footage of Mickey Thompson and the racer of his ‘69 Mustang funny car, Danny Ongais. It’s a six-minute look into the world of Mickey Thompson, circa 1969.
The funny car had only been around for a few years by ‘69, and racers like Ongais and Thompson were constantly striving to outdo the competition. For Thompson’s funny car, the combination of a Ford 427 SOHC “Cammer” V8, a supercharger, and nitromethane fuel led to sub-six second runs down the quarter-mile.
The video also has a few minutes of classic drag racing footage, back when there was a drag strip in every county and a Sunday afternoon wasn’t complete without seeing some racing. It’s a great video if you find yourself with a few minutes to spare, to take a gander into the world of 60’s funny car racing.
